Do Mexicans buy bags of water?

I heard that instead of water bottles, New Mexicans have water bags. Why do they do that?

Mexico used to sell most drinks in recyclable glass bottles, in order to purchase a drink of any kind you would have to exchange bottle or pay the a fee to buy the container. Or you could have it dispensed in a plastic bag. Now a days they have plastic containers.

In Mexico the word 'agua' is used both for water and for what americans would consider juice.
If you get more specific, the juice drink can also be called 'agua de sabor' (flavored water). It's made of fresh fruit which is liquified in a blender and mixed with sugar and water and ice. It's delicious!
Aguas are very often sold in bags by street vendors, loncherias, and cafeterias - it works really well if you're on the go. Into a plastic bag is scooped about 16 ounces of agua, a straw is inserted, and a knot is tied around the straw. The result is something akin to a capri-sun pouch (but tied instead of sealed off).
Also, one can often find small sealed plastic bags/pouches of water in grocery stores, pharmacies, and convenience stores around mexico. They are made of a slightly thicker plastic, but resemble a bag used to package rice, beans, or pasta here in the U.S. They take up less room and are cheaper than bottles of drinking water, and all one has to do to drink it is bite off the corner of the bag (insert straw if desired).

Here in Acapulco I regulally see clear plastic bags with straws used to sell juice type of drinks. Many from men standing in the middle of the street selling to passing cars or buses at a stop light,
Juice only - water in bottles.

New Mexico is a state in the southwestern portion the United States. Mexico is a country south of the United States.

I remember buying "agua pura" in bags in Mexico 10 or 15 years ago, but it is not as common anymore. Mostly water comes in plastic bottles now. Small stores would buy a large bottle of purified water and pour the water into plastic bags when customers wanted to buy some.

not any more, but it wasn't water bags, in mexico the bottle companies recycle the bottles by exchange them, so when you just to go to the store you had to take a bottle in order to buy your (lets say a coke) and take the coke with you, of course this was long time before plastic bottles but if you didn't have a bottle with you they just to either charge you for the soda and the bottle or give you the soda in a plastic bag lol, weird i know, but just FYI glass bottle coke are huge in mexico if you ever had the chance to visit mexico, try one i do it and i do pay for the glass...about 35% (im to lazy to carry my own bottle everytime) more but its the best damn coke in the world i guarantee it

their collapsable and reusable and lasts longer than plastic bottles.
