Do Mexicans know their ethnic ancestry? |
I am an American of German, Irish and Korean descent.
Of course, many of us(Americans) do not know our ancestry entirely but still we know at least a part of our ancestry.
I am just curious how things are going in Mexico.
Do Mexicans generally know their ethnic ancestry?
If they do, who are Mexican people's major ancestries?
If you are Mexican, do you personally know your heritage? Additional Details Are there many European descents in Mexico? |

A great majority of today's Mexicans, and several generations before, are of "Mestizo" descent. Therefore, most Mexicans are of Mexican ancestry. This is something of which most of us are aware. However, I doubt most know exactly wich indigenous ancestry runs in the familly; Aztec, Zapotec, Maya, etc. We can usually make an educated guess though, based on the place where our families come from.
When it comes to Mexicans of more recent inmigrant descent, (such as myself) we usually know it fairly well . For instance, I know that my family comes from the Canary Islands and Lebanon on my mother's side, but I don't know the history on the family on my father's side (who's parents, and grandparents, and probably grandparents too, were born in Mexico) |

Yes, we do. Or most of us at least. I have otomĂ, spanish and french blood from my mom's side, and only spanish from my dad's side. We can know that because our last names and the place our family was born (family storys also help). Mexican's are a mix from spanish and the different 'indigenas' groups (mentioned above) so they are our major ancestries, but as the spanish people came on the middle of 16th century and a lot has happen on all this time, right now we are various mix of different people; Plus, we are a country that also has had a lot of refugees from different places like southamerica, europe, middle-east and we have part of their history and blood here. |

Im mexican of european and american descendants.
I can tell you that in general mexicans don´t know anything of their ancestries, partly due to the mexican revolution, because the country lost a lot of documents.
The government has not any classified archives or the possibility to make a research about its ancestries. Actually there are not serious studies in Demography in Mexico and no register of the people who is getting in and out of the country .
Mexico has become a multiracial country as United States or the European Union. We have a lot of inmigration from South America, Lebanon, Jewish and asians.
We are not any more the classical country of the mixed spanish and indian culture. That was long time ago (about 500 years).
The people above wouldn´t know the names of their ancestries 150 years ago. But of course they are aztecs, ottomies, spaniards. Most mexicans don´t know but they have jewish and lebanese ancestries, they are not ottomies. You hear a lot of foreign surnames all the time in Mexico. |

I am not Mexican but I have been traveling in Mexico for almost 4 months and most of the Mexicans know there heritage because there are only a couple groups. The most obvious one is Mayan followed by the Spanish who came to Mexico and conquered over the Mayans. Those are the main 2 that make up the majority but there are also various groups of native Indians. |
