CURRENTLY:
U.S. citizens need to present either (a) a passport, passport card (scheduled to be in full production beginning in July 2008), or WHTI-compliant document; or (b) a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver's license, along with proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate.
You're good to go!
I cannot stress enough, it is not safe to go into Mexico ESPECIALLY Cuidad Juarez right now. The crime is high and the American Consolate strongly advises against it. I live here and NEVER go into Mexico. EVER. It is VERY dangerous. If you do go, be VERY cautious. DO NOT leave your drink anywhere that someone can slip something into it, do watch the bartender(s) make your drink. A friend of mine went to Chiuahua recently. He is FROM Mexico and he was drugged at the hotel. Woke up on the floor (felt ill) only to find that his wallet was missing.
Be careful. |

Those who said you do NOT need a passport yet are correct. passports will not be needed for LAND travel to and from Mexico until June 1 , 2009. |

We just asked the same question to an inmigration officer in St. Louis Mo. this past august. He explained that yes, you do. But he also mentioned that our friend would have to prove that she was allowed to live in the US. Green card, Driver license. etc. in other words she would have to convence the officer to let her back into the country.
Our friend went to Mexico city, and came back with no problems.
You should probably visit WWW.USCIS.GOV to make a decision. |

When I went from San Diego to Tijuana, they didn't ask for our passports but rather Green Cards and drivers license. The case for driving might be different however. |

It's always a good idea to apply for a passport anyway since the laws are tightening up but since you don't have time for now, I found this: (links provided below)
Travel by land or sea
Currently, US citizens entering and leaving Mexico by land or sea must present either a passport OR a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license, along with proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate or naturalization certificate. As of June 1, 2009 those traveling by land or sea will be required to present a passport or other WHTI compliant ID such as a passport card.
Or you can go to:
http://www.travel.state.gov/ which is supposed to have the most up to date info. |

Yes, you ABSOULTLY need a passport for Mexico. When they first changed the law recently, you could probably get by with 2 I'D's ie...birth certificate and driver's license. Providing you didn't care if you couldn't come back to the US. Now it is a must. If you are going for New Year's I doubt you can get one in a week in a half. Took me 6 weeks when I got mine, Good Luck!!!! I LOVE Mexico!! |
