When you visit any overseas country you must have a valid passport and a visa to enter that country So if you wish to visit mexico, you have to take your passport to the mexican embassy and get it endorsed.Do not travel to any foreign country without visa as you will not be allowed to leave the terminal. In fact you'll be on the first available flight back home

If you are a citizen of Andorra, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Island, Israel, Italy, Japan, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Puerto Rico, San Marino, Singapore, Slovenia, Spain, South Korea, Sweden, Switzerland, United States of America, Uruguay or Venezuela, you don’t need a visa to enter Mexico, although you must present a valid passport and fill out an immigration form for tourists and business trips, which can be obtained in travel agencies, airlines or at the point where you enter Mexico.
From any country you need a valid passport

Their are military checkpoints all through Mexico. I dont think you have to be afraid of them because all they are doing is looking for illegal drugs and wepons but if you go through without a visa they might give you a hard time.

Yes you need a visa to visit Mexico. Just go to the Mexican consulate or embassy near you to obtain one. They want to know the reason for travel to Mexico and length of stay.
