Do legal residents of the US have to have the Mexican or American passport? |
I told my dad what everyone responded on the last question I posted, but he wants to know which one he has to get. Please let me know. Thanks everyone who responded to my last question.
Additional Details
There is no question about the legal status. My dad is a permanent resident. I simply wanted to know, since he was born in Mexico, would he need a Mexican passport to get back into the US. He talked to some lady about traveling and she said he would need the American passport, but the problem is he's not a US citizen so why would he even get that. |

? you get the passport according to your citizenship!
If you have dual citizenship, you can get both....but you can use only the US passport to enter the US. If you are a US citizen, but try to enter US on Mexican passport, you can get in trouble!
If your dad is permanent resident, with Mexican citizensihp, then his green card & Mexican passport will get him back into US. |

Are you also thinking of VISAs? A visa is the permission you get from Mexico to enter their country. If you are going for less than 180 days, you may obtain a tourist visa at the border. |

If it's about his traveling to Mexico and returning, and he has Permanent Resident status, he'll need his green card to indicate same.
A passport is only issued by the country of someone's birth, so if he was born in Mexico, he can only have a Mexican passport. |

It sounds like there may be a question about the legality of your status in the U.S. since you mention "legal residents". Since this is listed under Mexico travel I assume you are going to Mexico. If there is any question as to your status here, stay here, otherwise there may be a problem getting back. I would want to ask someone in authority (passport office, see list in web site below) about this or be sure.
The site below has very good facts and is from the US Embassy in Mexico. You don't "have" to have a passport but it is highly recommended.
I am not sure wheather you need a Mexican or U.S. passport but the best way to find out is to vist the passport office and give them the details they need to answer your question. |
