You got a bunch of wrong information. You MUST have a passport to FLY to Mexico. That has been the law for 2 years now. Starting June 1, you will also need a passport to travel to Mexico by LAND. Right now, you can still go by land with your birth certificate and photo I.D. See 1st site below. It currently takes 4 weeks to get a passport by standard processing, and 2 to 3 weeks expedited. If she happens to live in or near one of the 13 Regional Passport Agencies, she can call for an appointment, go, wait and get her passport the same day.l See next 2 sites. Yes, due to changes in immigration since 9/11 --- HSA demands everyone have a Passport.
You would need it to get back in to this country.
Now just how wise is it to go to Mexico --- Beheading cops, open drug wars --- And remember even in Mexican news, "It is all the fault of the USA --- either for wanting drugs or allowing people to own weapons freely.

even if your driving you need a passport. Although if you live in a boarder state you might be able to get something on your drivers license that allows you to get back to America.
Getting into Mexico shouldn't be a problem, its coming back. |

Yes, but it could take up to 90 days to recieve one. AAA is one way you can get one. Also try your local court house they can help also.
www.travel.state.gov/passport is the official website to get a passport. You may want to expedite it to get one quicker, but it cost extra. |

I think you do even if not flying just to get across the border, but your birth certificate might work in a pinch. |

They actually changed the law on this about a year ago. You used to need a passport to go outside of the US period. But they changed it so now they also have a passport card (looks like a drivers license) and that can get you into canada or mexico, perhaps this only pertains to driving, because if you drive you only need a drivers license. |
