you need a passport, which requires a SS# to get

As of January 07 - the are requiring you to have a passport if you are traveling to and from the US to Mexico only via air. If you are crossing the border via ground transportation you will only need a birth certificate and/or valid drivers license.

A driver's license or birth certificate should be okay until January 23rd. Starting 1/23/07 you will need a passport to enter into the United States.

No you do not. As of January 23rd 2007 you will need a passport to cross the US/Mexican border.
"Beginning January 23, 2007, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will be required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document, or an Alien Registration Card, Form I-551, if applicable."
