You do not need a passport if you drive to Mexico. You do need it if you plan on flying there. As of JANUARY 2008 you will be required to have a passport but not until then. Take your birth certificate and an ID (drivers license) with you.
Beginning January 23, 2007, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will be required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document, or an Alien Registration Card, Form I-551, if applicable.
As early as January 1, 2008, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security. While recent legislative changes permit a later deadline, the Departments of State and Homeland Security are working to meet all requirements as soon as possible. Ample advance notice will be provided to enable the public to obtain passports or passport cards for land/sea entries. |

People, people, people!
Why do people answer without knowing the facts?
You do NOT, underline and highlight NOT, need a passport to drive back from Mexico ... YET. You will in 2008.
Here is the link to the official government website. |

As of January everyone needs a passport to enter Mexico. No matter if by plane or car. This is as a result of homeland security. My husband and I travel a great deal and I am an advocate of this. We applied for our passport in the beginning of January 2007 and to date have not received it! They are saying up to 12 weeks so if you travel at all.....please apply now or you will pay an arm and a leg to expedite them!!! Good luck and safe traveling. You can do it at most post offices. P.S. Have your pics taken at a Walgreen's is much cheaper!!! |

Currently no passport is needed if you drive in. You will need ID. Your driver's license with photo is good. |

It's my understanding you even need one if you walk in...Why would they discriminate against those who travel by air? |
