It is not required for a USA citizen to travel to Mexico on foot or in a car. You do have to have a photo ID and at least one other document such as a birth certificate. You are required to have a passport to travel to Mexico by airplane.

ONLY "Biker Dude" gave you the correct answer. just like for Canada...read the site below for yourself. Passports are not needed for LAND travel to Mexico or Canada until June 1, 2009. They are needed for AIR travel. There are old, outdated websites that some people give you...this site below is always current.

To go and return by land, you don't need a passport. You need an ID card/License. Also a birth cert.

The website by US secretary of defense says as of Jan 2007 we need a passport to go to Mexico ONLY when you travel by air. However, as you correctly thought since Jan 2008 we do need a passport no matter what-air, sea or land.
