If you are flying and a USA citizen, YES, you need a passport. If you are driving or walking NO, you just need a photoID and birth certificate.

You need a passport to RE-ENTER THE USA.
Remember, we are trying to shield US from terrorist (or as President Bush pronounces it as Tourists for Terrorists).

if you're driving, not until Jan of 2008. If you're flying yes. It is now taking up to 10 weeks to get a passport or 4 weeks expedited.

If you travel by land, no. But if your destination is beyond 25 kilometer of the border, you need to apply for a Mexico Visa. Mostly, Mexico has visitor center close to border to process application. In that case, you need to present either a US passport or birth certificate. If you are returning to US by land, mostly a driver's license is sufficient, but very likely the CBP officer will ask for passport or birth certificate if you are not local resident at the border zone. If you are caucashion, they may just let you walk/drive throgh. if you return by air, passport is a must. My advise is to bring either passport or BC anyway. Either side can give you a hard time if they are in bad mood.

Yes. You have to have a passport to travel in and out of the United States. Leave yourself about 6 to 8 wks to get it in the mail.

yes, since Jan 2007 you need a passport. most of the sites say a birth certificate and valid id , drivers license. but i would have a passport just in case.
