It really depends on where your going. Places like canada or Mexico or countries that have reciprocal agreements don't require Passports. Other ountries like Bermuda will take a passport or a birth certificate. You should always check with your travel agent or the american embassy of that country to find out if you need a passport. Many times you can find it right on the web. Here is a link for Canada that shows them all. This is pretty much the same for the United States since both canada and the US have reciprocal agreements. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/visas.html

Get a passport. Right now Mexico & Canada do not require one. But this situation will change the beginning of next year. This is time consuming, so don't put it off.

Much better to have a passport .... but drivers license and notarized birth certificate will do

It depends where you are traveling. Within the US you do not need one. If you leave the country you will need one to re-enter it... However if you go to Canada I think a birth certificate is enough to re-enter.

It depends on where you're going. If you're going to another contry, then yes. I don't think you need one if going to Cancun. You might want to call the people who give out the passports and ask, just to be sure. It takes a long time for them to process them(months), so give yourself time.

You only need a passport to go into another country, but if you stay in the U.S. then you don't need one.
