Do you have to have a passport for a certain amount of time before it can be used?

I am planning a trip out of the country in April and will be getting my passport. My sister told me that you have to have a passport for several months before you can use it. Is this true?

Silvatungfox
Your passport is good from the day it is issued. If you are going to a country that requires a visa, you will also need to arrange to get that. Usually passports are valid for 10 years before you need to renew.

If you are traveling abroad you might also want to get a rail pass... (they have youth, euro rail, and country specific ones) You want to get that before you go as they are much cheaper to buy in your home country than when you get where you are going.

Passport's usally valid for 3 years even you don't use it, just make sure that while on your trip your passport woun't expire.

THANKFULLY NO. YOU CAN USE IT THE MINUTE YOU GET IT.

I GOT MINE AND USED IT THE SAME DAY.

IF YOU HAVE MORE DOUBTS, YOU CAN CALL THE PASPORT CENTER OR CALL/GO TO WHERE YOU GOT YOUR PASSPORT AND I AM SURE THEY WILL TELL YOU FOR SURE. BUT AS FAR AS I KNOW, NO YOU DON'T.

You just need it in time to get a "VISA" next to whatever country you will be going to and how long your stay will be,you also have to buy a round trip ticket!so,yeah,you need the passport in time to go through the next step of getting the visa ready!

You may use your passport any day between the "issue date" and "expiration date", not mattering how long it's been in your hands. The validity use starts from the "issue date" written in the first identification page
