Here is the correct info !
By land - no. Law changes in June. They will be backed up with passports applications so get one now.
By air - Airlines will not board you w/o it.
You can stay 6 months on a tourist visa then must leave and return on another.
Do not lose your tourist visa! They will aask for it when you depart and you must have it. A $3 a day fine if you stay past and it will be collected BEFORE you leave.

You need a passport to fly to Mexico. Upon entering customs, they'll stamp your visa card for 6 months (although sometimes they ask you how long you'll be staying).
Other than that, if you plan on living with others, not working, and not doing anything other than chilling out, you can live in Mexico indefinitely on a FMT (Tourist Visa). A lot of people (including myself) just go back to the States every six months and then reenter Mexico.
However, if you want to do anything serious (work, own property, start a business), you'll need an FM3 (Business Visa). If you marry a Mexican, you can get your FM2 (Residency) in about 2-3 months. |

It depends on the mode of travel at present.
For flights into Mexico you will need a passport in any case.
For land travel into Mexico you may use your driver's license as ID and the original or a certified copy of your birth certificate as proof of citizenship in lieu of a passport until May 31, 2009.
From June 1, 2009 you will need a passport book, a passport card, or an enhanced drivers license denoting your citizenship to travel to Mexico by land or sea.
For entering Mexico you need to fill a tourist card MFTTV (Migration Form for Tourists, Transmigrants, Visiting Businesspersons, or Visiting Consultants).

Passports are now required for entry into Mexico and Canada. |

Yes, you now need a passport to go into Mexico. I would make sure to keep it safe, along with your driver's license and if you have another type of photo ID. With that you should be fine. |
