See the website below to read the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative. Right now you only need a passport to fly to Mexico. Starting in Jan. 2008 you will need a passport for all types of travel to and from Mexico. You can go to the second website for passport info and info on the current "flexiility" program for those wo do not receive their passports in time.

If you are flying - yes. If you are walking or sailing then no, not yet. But, you will have to have one starting in Jan for any travel into and out of Mexico. However, it's a very good idea to have one anyway.

Not necessarily... you might only need a birth certificate to go to Mexico if you are driving. For flights you probably do need a passport. However, you will most likely need a passport to go back into the US because of the new laws.

I believe that an extension was recently made on this law, but it's a good idea anyhow, particularly if you could pass for Mexican.

?
Yes, new law I think..

You need a passport to travel anywhere now. As long as your crossing any borders, you need a passport. No other ID will do.

Technically, no. You just need proof that you are a US citizen (ie, birth certificate).
However, there's a catch. To get back into the US, you will need your passport.

Yes. But apparently Mexicans don't need passports to travel back and forth.
