No. You don't need a passport to go to Cancun. It is wise to get one....You should get a NOTARIZED BIRTH CERTIFICATE and a DRIVERS LICENSE. Not an expired D.L.; you can be turned away and the air line can get fined for allowing you to travel on an expired DL. Your birth certificate should be notarized and received from where you were born. Not a "Certificate of Live Birth" from the hospital. You need to go to the Health District get your Birth Certificate from the State of which you were born in. Passports are a lot better because passports include all that stuff and a little bit more. Passports are like a national form of ID. |

if you are American citizen, you will need a US passport, When you travel back, you will have to show your passport, they will know you are a US citizen and they will let you in.
In Mexico you won´t need it, only at the airport. |

It's better to have one. I've heard that the united states ask for a passport when returning. It is not so bad to carry with a passport. |

Like pueo said, to enter into Cancun, you must have a notorized copy of your birth certificate if you dont have a passport, as well as a valid unexpired State ID such as a driver's liscense. An Airline can not permit you to fly from origin if you do not have proper documents. If somehow you get to Cancun and get to Immigration with out it, the airline is fined and you are sent back on the next flight (i.e deported)
A certificate of live birth does not count. They even have a seal, but its not a legal seal. Copies of a birth certificate are illegal, so make sure you have the real thing on hand at check in.
