Stay away from DF, that place is dangerous for a tourist unless you have family there like me ^-^.

You should go to Veracruz. The water there is perfect temperature and you can walk like 50 ft out and still be waist deep. I went to a small town called Tecolutla with my fam from Mexico City. I met a boy there:) <3.

You should also try Guadalajara if you want an urban, yet safer, and traditional destination. The food there is the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You should go to a Parian- they are places where they have food, mariachi, and cocktails the size of your head for 5-6 dollars!

I think that playa del carmen is a nice place for a first trip

For the first trip, I recommend the Rivieria Maya which is anything from Cancun south. Cancun is the most expensive and it gets cheaper as you go south. A lot depends on what you're interested in. Take a look at the Loco Gringo site below, to see if anything sparks your interest.

Mexico is fantastico! and a big country! I went to huatulco(beaches on the pacific),chiapas rainforests & ruins,oacaxa state,mexico city, all are different,depends on what your into really. there really is so much out their.......go today!!!!

acapulco is very commercial and popular but not nice at all. it is very dirty, unfortunatelly. i suggest you go to Los Cabos, Cancun,Huatulco,Puerto Escondido; which is cheaper n amazing, especially the beach ''carrizalillo''. Also Ixtapa Zihuatanejo is worthy. this is as to beaches.
If you want to see historical and colonial places, go to Guanajuato and take a tour there where you will see old allies and the underground city, u will hear stories told by kids, etc.
Oaxaca is full of history and beautiful places, like 'hiervelagua', 'mitla', 'tule tree', 'monte albÃ¡n (pyramids n archaeological sites). and ask local ppl about a place called ''la escondida'' where u can eat the buffet of typical food which is very good.

I've been to the small border towns often but my first trip was to a resort in Tulum - 45mins outside of Cancun. It was a great time!

I would suggest Cancun or anywhere on the Rivera Mayan.
