If you are an American citizen, you just get a tourist card at the border when you enter Mexico. the cost is about $22.00 USD. |

Baja isn't in California!!!
Baja is the long and beautiful (as well) peninsula from Mexico. It's located in the northwest from Mexico and it's very common to see American citizens and a lot of backpackers traveling over the peninsula.
I think you don't need a Mexican visa to visit "the Baja", as it's usually known by some travelers. |

Some parts of Baja California in Mexico, like Tijuana, and others like Rocky Point (Puerto Penasco) are considered a "Free Zone", meaning that you do not need a passport and/or travel visa to enter. You will, however, need proof of US citizenship to re-enter the United States (such as Driver's License, Birth Certificate, etc.).
Also, please note that starting June, 2008 you will indeed need a valid US passport:
Beginning June 1, 2008, The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will begin enforcing the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI), legislation passed by Congress. This mandates that anyone crossing the border into the United States must have proof of citizenship. The passport is currently the only document that satisfies this requirement.
The legislation states that this requirement is to go into effect on June 1, 2009, but DHS intends to begin enforcing this legislation early. So, have your passport ready for June 1, 2008.

Depending on your nationality.
Citizens from certain countries are only required a valid passport.
Others do need a visa. |
