Here is what you need to know. As of now, you don't unless you're flying. Come Jan. 31, 2008, you will need at least a driver's license and a birth certificate.

Now, if you drive or walk into Mexico, sometime during the summer of 2008 and with at least 60 days notice you will be required to have a passport. (All of this information is in the first link).

Now, keep this is mind. Congress has pushed to have this date moved up to June of 2009. (This is in the second link).

Recently, President Bush signed into law a $555 billion spending bill. Now, while I'm not sure if this is in that spending bill, it would be best to check with your senator to see if the passport deadline has been extended. (This is in the third link).

I have included the fourth link just in case you decide to drive into Mexico. They provide car insurance as their main thing. However, they do give you so much other information such as Mexico laws, tourists visas, etc.

I provided the last link in case you decide to drive into Mexico. You will have to pay a fee to bring your car into Mexico. Keep your receipt because you get your money back once you leave Mexico.

NOTE: I just called my Senator's office and asked if the passport deadline has been pushed up and the interns are not sure if it is included in the bill or not so go with the official government website until the government website says different.

I don't know why I received a thumbs down. What I do know is that I gave factual information backed up by actual links to prove what I say is true.

The correct answer is NO. Passports are not currently needed to travel by LAND to and from Mexico. See website below and read top half of the page carefully to see the current info.

You will be needing a passport, to come back in from Mexico. The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI), which goes into effect Jan 31st 2008, makes it essential to present citizenship proof and govt. issued photo identification, such as a birth certificate and driver's license on border crossings in to the U.S. You can make it easier by carrying a passport. Until Jan 31st, you do not need it.
http://travel.state.gov/travel/cbpmc/cbpmc_2223.html

Congress is trying to postpone this requirement, as most people who crossover regularly do not have passports, and the passport office is totally flooded. So you just might get a delay of a few more months before this law goes into effect.

None of these answers are correct except for charlie's answer.
Ive crossed the border into Tijuana from San ysidro dozens of times and never have been asked for any form of i.d. from Mexican immigration, coming back is a different story

If you walk, float, or drive across the border you do not NEED a passport currently. Looks like the new rules will not go into effect until mid-summer of 2008. If you FLY into Mexico you will need your passport. Good Luck!!

Don't go to Tijuana anyway unless you want to be robbed or murdered

glassesguru
Yes, you must have a passport.

Yes, you do now. Wasn't always that way. I think it went into effect sometime in 2007. Gotta have a passport to go anywhere outside the US.. that is, if you want to get back in.
