Additional Details I just visited the US Embassy website for Mexico and it says that as long as you have a state issued ID AND proof of citizenship (birth certificate) you may pass. I think I am going to take my birth certificate, SS card and ID just to be safe.
Three wrong answers in a row. Passports will not be needed for land travel to and from mexico until june 1, 2009. Right now you ned your birth certificate and photo I.D. See site below. Do not need your social security card. you will need to apply for a passport a couple of months before next june..there will probably be a grand rush of people needing passports at that time.

The ones who said you will need your passport are wrong. You only need a passport if you are flying into Mexico. Charlie is right, you won't need a passport until June of 2009. Just bring your ID and birth certificate, no need for a SS card (it's not an acceptable form of ID).

An ID or drivers license number and a birth certificate would be fine, but it doesnt hurt to take your social security card just in case. Since you are driving I recommend auto insurance and since you are going a few times I suggest buying a 6 or 12 month package as it is way cheaper than a lot of day policies.

obviously if you are a young american there are no reasons to go live in Mexico..... you just go there in vacations..... that part of crossing the river i find it really offensive
