Do you need a passport to drive through the texas-mexico border and back? |
a few friends and i want to drive from san antonio texas to cancun in mexico for spring break and we are wondering if we need passports or if valid texas drivers licenses or school IDs will be good enough to get into mexico and more importantly back into the USA when we are done. anyone know? no guesses please |

Passports will not be needed to drive to and from Mexico until a "later" date that has not yet been set but will be after next summer. See 1st website and read top half of page carefully for current info. Do you realize how looong a drive that is? Have you ever driven in Mexico before? You cannot drive after dark in Mexico. the drive is MINIMUM of 31 hrs and more likely 36 or more. It can be done , but is a very challenging drive. You will nned your drivers licences AND certified birth certificates...as well as a car permit, and Mexican car insurance. Consider a closer location...maybe Corpus Christi. I am an American living in the state of Veracruz...about half -way to Cancun from San Antonio...you would use up a lot of your vacaton time driving. |

well i just got a paper today when crossing to the US, it says that people above 19 have to present a passport or a birth certificate with an state issued id by january 31 |

NO! not until july, you need birth certificeates, ID and s.s card. have a great trip do you know wehre cancun is its 3 days from the boarder. |

I am from Arizona. We used to drive to Mexico all the time. We just had to show our ID's on the way back. Whatever you buy down there put it on the dashboard when you are driving back into the U.S. it makes coming home a lot easier. This was 2 years ago. I don't know how much it has changed. Hope that helps a little. If you have a passport, I think that's a Little better to get by. |
