Currently you need a passport for air travel.

It would be highly recommended. But, the current passport requirements state that as of Jan. 2007 anyone entering the US by air MUST have a passport. For those traveling by land /water the passport will be required by JAN 2008. This is in regards to crossing borders with Mexico and Canada.
If you don't have your passport and no time to get one; at minimum have your birth certificate and current driver's license.

NOT having a passport opens you up to additional 'scrutiny'. As of last month, you do need a passport... as the previous poster said, you don't need one to GO... but to get back IN.

I was there about 14 years ago, and all I needed was my drivers license to get back across the border. Check with Border patrol, things might have changed since then.
