Wow, an entire page of incorrect answers.

If you are flying into Mexico, you will need a passport.

If you are driving, you will need government ID (driver's license) and proof of citizenship (birth certificate).

Tonalc2 was the first to get it right. Flying--you need a passport. Driving--you need your drivers license and birth certificate.
After June 1st, 2009, you will need a passport or the Passport Card to drive across the border.
The Passport Card is cheaper and quicker to get (if you never intend to fly to another country). Click the link below to learn more about the Passport Card.

I agree with the last answerer, but...
It is easiest to just take your passport, it can avoid LOTS of questions and possible problems. It's really not worth risking what could turn into, minimally, a huge headache when you can easily apply for and receive your passport (expidited) for a couple hundred bucks and a few weeks' wait.
Better safe than sorry, especially when it comes to being allowed back into your own country...

not unless you are going by plane... but getting there will be easier then coming back without one coming back you will need ID and birthcertificate and proof that u are a citizen... it will make it a lot easier if you do have one... you can go to the post office and its like $115 with them doing ur picture and all so its not to expensive but you can go to like CVS and do ur pics for like $8 and get the passport at the postoffice for only $100.. but if u have a passport it will make coming back easier...
and the law to have to have a passport wont be effective til sometime in 2009...(so it does matter when u are going too)

Sorry, but most answers are wrong. If you are driving really all they check is your picture id. It is good to have these for small children but if you don't have one for small children they will take their birth cert.If you are flying or going by sea then that's when you need a passport. We have houses we own in Mexico and travel there at least 2 times a year and I dont have a passport and none of our children do either. Their pretty easy with the Americans.

Dan
If I'm not mistaken they passed a law. As of 2008 you have to have a passport to go anywhere....

sasavert
yes, since you are going and leaving different countries.
