Here are the US requirements for re-entering the United States when traveling to Mexico, Bermuda, Panama, and the Caribbean.
http://travel.state.gov/travel/cbpmc/cbpmc_2223.html
A passport will be required to reenter the US as of December 31, 2006 if traveling by air or sea.
A passport will be required for land border crossings as of December 31, 2007.
The best thing to do is just get a passport. You can get one expedited, but I forget how.
http://travel.state.gov/passport/passport_1738.html
Without a passport, you should take a birth certificate as well as photo id.

Yes, but you have to be careful. I'd like to go, some time. But everyone who goes, has to be careful. I was once told that if you drive to Mexico, but you don't give the street people any coins, they'll shoot your tires. I was also once told that the police in Mexico are so corrupt, they'll frame anyone of their choice, for drug possesion. |

If you are an American you do not need one, however, the law is changing at the end of next year, and EVERYONE will need a passport to go. Right now all you need is a birth certificate and a picture ID. |

I don't believe that you need a passport to go to Mexico. From what I heard you will in 2008 but not now. When I went to Canada, I just needed my Drivers Licence to get back in the US. |

In fact, you dont need a passport to come to Mexico. US citizen can travel to Mexico only with a birth certificate and picture ID.
Until Next year (2007) you will need a valid passport to come to Mexico |

you currently do not need a passport. like mentioned before, a birth certificate and a photo ID will suffice. however, if you are traveling by car, you will need to get a "permiso" at the international bridge. this slip is allowing you permission to travel in mexico. it is valid for 7 days from the date issued and it is free of charge. however, if you plan to stay longer, tell them and i will cost you about $20.00 USD. word of adivce: if you exchange dollars for pesos, make sure to use your pesos before you leave mexico. if you want to exchange the pesos for dollars once you're back in the US, you will receive less than it's value in US dollars (i.e. $20.00 USD becomes about 200 pesos but returning the pesos to a US bank to exchange back for US currency would only give you about 15.00 USD) |

New Requirements for Travelers
The Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 requires that by January 1, 2008, travelers to and from the Caribbean, Bermuda, Panama, Mexico and Canada have a passport or other secure, accepted document to enter or re-enter the United States. In order to facilitate the implementation of this requirement, the Administration is proposing to complete it in phases following a proposed timeline, which will be published in the Federal Register in the near future.
In the proposed implementation plan, which is subject to a period of initial public comment, the Initiative will be rolled out in phases, providing as much advance notice as possible to the affected public to enable them to meet the terms of the new guidelines. The proposed timeline will be as follows:
December 31, 2006 - Requirement applied to all air and sea travel to or from Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda.
December 31, 2007 - Requirement extended to all land border crossings as well as air and sea travel.
This is a change from prior travel requirements and will affect all United States citizens entering the United States from countries within the Western Hemisphere who do not currently possess valid passports. This new requirement will also affect certain foreign nationals who currently are not required to present a passport to travel to the United States. Most Canadian citizens, citizens of the British Overseas Territory of Bermuda, and to a lesser degree, Mexican citizens will be affected by the implementation of this requirement. |

As of December 2007 I believe you will be required to have your passport on you just to go into mexico. As of now, you can still go and have your drivers license handy but I guess it would be a good idea to just start taking it with you in case something may happen. |

No you do not need a passport. I lived in West Texas 60 miles from the border my entire life. The girl above does not know what she is talking about. You do need a birth certificate for certain, and possibly some other form of ID, but a passport is not necessary. 100% certain on this. (Went to Cozumel in December as well). |

Well, it depends. If you are only going for 1 or 2 days then all you need is an I.D. However, if you are going for longer then it's safer to get a passport. |

Three items are needed to enter Mexico:
A Photo I.D. (such as a Driver's License or a passport, starting at age 18 and above)
A Tourist Card or F.M.N.
A Valid Proof Of Citizenship
The tourist card is your "permission" from the Mexican government to visit Mexico . It is available free of charge. The airlines always have an ample supply upon check-in.
Do not lose or deface the bottom portion returned to you after the immigration inspection. It must be returned to Mexican Immigration upon departure. TIP: Write down your tourist card number and keep it with your travel documents. If the card is lost, having the number will help greatly.
Keep your tourist card and travel documents in a secure place. Do not carry them with you everywhere you go, unless traveling extensively from your point of arrival.
You can ask to have your card validated for more time (up to 180 days) than you'll actually need. |
