Do you need a passport to go on a cruise to Mexico or would a birth certificate be sufficient?

Someone asked this question 2 years ago, but I needed an update because I'm not sure if I need one or not. Does anyone know if they are still accepting birth certificates or do you need a passport to go to Mexico? I plan on going in 2 months.

At this time, you will not need a passport on a cruise until June of 2009, as long as it is land or sea based travel.
You are still encouraged to get a passport, however, because if any emergency arises and you cannot return to the US on a ship, you would need a passport to fly home.

You will need to show a birth certificate and photo ID and this will be sufficient.

Many of the cruise lines have become confused. So here is how it goes for many people.

You call the cruise line and they say all is well. But when you try to board they deny it as they would be liable and have issues if you were denied entry into Mexico. So most lines have adopted the no passport no ship rule.

2 months is more than enough time to get a passport.

I beleive that the rules have changed. You will need a passport to travel anywhwere outside the US. It may be difficult for you to reenter the US without your passport even from Canada or Mexico.

To come back to the US by air or sea "cruise" you must have US passport. If you were traveling by land " car, bus," you must have state issued photo ID and birth certificate. The law for traveling by land will change in 2009, but that change has been pushed back now 2 times.

i think that there is a new law that calls for a passport now...
