Currently, you just need proof of citizenship. This can be a passport, or a driver's license and birth certificate.

Starting January 1st 2008, passports will be required no matter where you go. See this article from the state department for more information

No...you only need your state certified copy of your birth certificate and your state drivers license/ID card.
**Passports were originally going to be required starting Dec. 31st of this year. That has been changed until Jan. 1 of 2008 due to one of the major passport centers being destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. So for now..you don't need the passport.

Not at this time. I recall hearing that in the next year or so, The US will require US citizens to show a passport upon returning to the US from Mexico-- but I don't know when that will be going into effect.

As a citizen all you need is your birth certificate and a state issued picture ID

Starting in January passports will be required for both Mexico and Canada
