Not if you travel by December 31, 2006; by air or sea, you'll need one after that. By December 31, 2007, you'll need one for land crossings as well. |

It's not the going to Mexico you need anything, it's coming back to the US you need something. I think you just need a drivers license right now, but soon you will need a passport to go to Mexico and Canada. |

It depends and no one touched on this. If you stay within 15 miles of the border, all you need is your id to cross back into the US. But if you plan on traveling further inland, then you will need further documentation, either your birth certificate or passport(recommend passport, just safer). The reason that once you exceed this distance, they have a customs check point that will require you to show proper documents, and you will also need to get a permit for your vehicle(see link below) so that you can travel further inland. Lastly, don't forget to get car insurance in SD before you cross, it's cheap and you'll have coverage. If something happens while in Mexico, even if it is only Tijuana, your US car insurance does not cover you. |

Actually, once I went to mexico and used my ID to return back to the US.
Mexico doesnt even ask you for a passport... |

No. Bring a driver's license though. Also, tell people you are going there, where you'll be, and when you expect to be back. It's not all milk and cookies in TJ. |
