Currently, you do not need a passport to go to Mexico, Canada, or even the Caribbean. That means you don't need a passport to go to Cancun. You only need your birth certificate (to prove you were born in the US) and a picture ID (like your driver's license.)
HOWEVER- that will soon be changing starting January 1, 2008 you will need a passport.
The Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 requires that by January 1, 2008, travelers to and from the Caribbean, Bermuda, Panama, Mexico and Canada have a passport or other secure, accepted document to enter or re-enter the United States. In order to facilitate the implementation of this requirement, the Administration is proposing to complete it in phases following a proposed timeline, which will be published in the Federal Register in the near future.
This is a change from prior travel requirements and will affect all United States citizens entering the United States from countries within the Western Hemisphere who do not currently possess valid passports. This new requirement will also affect certain foreign nationals who currently are not required to present a passport to travel to the United States. Most Canadian citizens, citizens of the British Overseas Territory of Bermuda, and to a lesser degree, Mexican citizens will be affected by the implementation of this requirement.

It's not necessary if you live in the U.S.A. However, the U.S. Embassy recommends traveling with a valid U.S. passport to avoid any entry delays. I went last year without a passport and had no problems. |

Currently you don't need a passport to travel to Mexico, but just to be on the safe side, my husband and I are getting ours this week. We already had the photos made.... looks about as bad a driver's license. |

Well, if you live in the USA you need a passport to travel anywhere out of country, probably even Mexico. You could always check a government website or something. |

As of the first of January, all travel outside the US requires a passport, including Mexico and Canada. |
