Do you need a passport to visit Mexico, or is that still to come ? |
My girlfriend and I are traveling in my 18 wheeler to Vegas, and then to Yuma AZ. If we have to wait around in the Yuma area for a load back to Ohio, I would like to visit San Luis Colorado Sonora, on the border of Mexico and Arizona. Can anyone tell me about San Luis Colorado? I've been to Matamoros, and it seemed a little scary. Is San Luis similar? What is there to do there? |

you dont need a passport to enter back to the U.S while driving, that will take affect next year. As far as San Luis Colorado there is some stuff that you can do, but it is not a really big place. Mainly food is good. |

I've been researching this lately because we would like to go to Puerto Punesco (Rocky Point), which is just south of Yuma across the border, at the tip of the sea of cortez. There is a free zone for some miles just around the border where you don't need to have a passport yet (not officially until spring of 2008). But after you leave this free zone, you do need a passport to get back into the states. Also, I've been reading that when one travels to Mexico by car, one has to have mexican auto insurance (which is apparently available at the border and at some convenient store just before the border). From what I understand, it costs about $12 a day and if you don't have it and get into an accident, then you're screwed. (I bet people would purposely get into an accident with an american).

You do not need a passport to DRIVE to and from Mexico until January 2008. But it would be a good idea to apply around August or September. It is currently taking about 3 to 4 months to get a passport...and likely to get worse. See the website below for passport info. |

Yea you have to have one in order to leave the United States. If you don't have one when you return they will just leave you in Mexico and won't let you come back. |

Assuming you're taking a car across the border (and not your 18 wheeler), you don't need a passport yet and you don't need a car permit either; as long as you don't go too far into Mexico.
I passed by Yuma a few months ago and was hoping to go to San Luis Colorado, but decided not to. I seriously doubt it's any different than any other border town with high crimes, very polluted and corrupted and nothing much to look at. |

Yes you will need a valid passport, plus on the plane you will have to fill out some forms so take a pen with you. |
