Well if you a citizen why not getting a passport and avoid delays or questions? Is true that if you go walking of by car you don't need it, unless you go by airplane.

This is a very common question and most people are uninformed. You do not need a passport to drive or walk into any part of Mexico. According to the Western Travel Initiative U.S. Citizens entering or leaving Mexico will not need a U.S. passport to cross the border by land until June 1st, 2009 thanks to a Congressional amendment signed into law by President Bush on December 26, 2007. This amendment delays implementation of the land crossing passport requirement. You will need the following documents or you will most likely get hassled

CURRENTLY:
U.S. citizens need to present either (a) a passport, passport card (available in spring 2008), or WHTI-compliant document; or (b) a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license, along with proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate.

WHTI-Compliant Travel Documents for U.S. citizen travel via land or sea, as of January 31, 2008:

* Trusted Traveler Cards (NEXUS, SENTRI, or FAST)
* State Issued Enhanced Driver’s License (when available)
* Enhanced Tribal Cards (when available)
* U.S. Military Identification with Military Travel Orders
* U.S. Merchant Mariner Document when traveling in conjunction with official maritime business
* Native American Tribal Photo Identification Card
* Form I-872 American Indian Card

Unless you are flying there and back, NO you do NOT need a passport - birth certificate and photo id, like a drivers license.

YES. You now need a passport to enter another country and to enter back into the united states.
