I am a permanent resident of usa, i have a green card issued by the INS, I had a question like what documents do I need to show up at the border for a visit to mexico and while coming back and re-entering USA, do i need a passport or just the state issued photo id/ driving license and a green card are enough?

If you are not a us citizen you will need your passport, since you have a green card then no matter what country you are from you are ok to go to mexico on those two things.

Starting Jan 1st 2007, you will need to have a valid passport to enter the USA or cross over into Mexico.
Until then, a raised seal birth certificate and goverment issued id card if you are a national of the USA
If you are a resident alien, then the requirements may be different and you should contact the local INS departmnet for guidelines.
