You didn't need to in the past... Now you do.

Things are getting more strict on the whole border crossing.

Only if you are fly, by land and Sea a passport is not required, if going to a border town, just a Driver's License will do. If you are going further in then (more than 15 miles, except in Baja) you'll need a birth certificate or voters registration.

Hope these websites help, have a good trip.

here is the straight scoop...If you are FLYING to Mexico, you need a passport. If you are DRIVING to Mexico , you do not need a passport until Jan. 2008. Right now due to the passport backup, IF YOU HAVE APPLIED for a passport and will not receive it before your flight date, you can get a waiver IF you have your application receipt and follow the instructions on the state dept website. See the website below.

yes, unfortunately after 9-11 also need a passport to Canada

lewisepalmer
Yes, but the government just announced that they were going to ease the requirements to travel to Mexico because the changes are causing major delays in getting a passport. I think all you will need is proof that you have applied for a passport and not the actual passport. This might last for the next 6 months or so..

As of January 2006, all you needed was your birth certificate, a valid state photo ID and your social security card.
Wish I was going back to the beach... have fun!

Dang! Good thing I looked this up, before posting:
For travel between the United States and Mexico prior to DECEMBER of 2006...
If you are a US citizen and you are traveling between the US and Mexico PRIOR to December 31, 2006, you do NOT need a passport to enter Mexico and to re-enter the United States. You do need a certified copy of your birth certificate and a government issued photo I.D. if you are not traveling with a passport.

A certified copy of your birth certificate may be obtained from the Department of Health in the state in which you were born. Most departments will have a web site that can easily be found by doing a search on the internet for "your state" department of health. These sites will have a section on obtaining a birth certificate.

An acceptable government issued photo I.D. would be a valid driver's license.

For travel between the United States and Mexico as of DECEMBER 31, 2006...
All US citizens will be required to have a passport to travel to/from Mexico as of December 31, 2006. To obtain a US Passport or for more information, go to http://travel.state.gov/passport/passport_1738.html.

and even more info:
Visitors from Canada and the U.S.A. do not need a passport to enter Mexico [Drivers Licence, Photo ID]. If you use a passport it must be valid for at least six months from the date of departure.

NOTE: After 9/11 Mexican immigration was demanding passports for ALL visitors. This was only TEMPORARY. Things are back to normal again and for Canadian and U.S. citizens' valid identification is required, passport is optional.

US citizens [as of Jan. 23 2007] require a passport to ENTER the USA NOT Mexico.

This means if you leave the United States you need a passport to get back in [by airplane/helicopter].

txinferno
No. You need one to enter past a certain part, you should have one. If you are going just to the other side of the border, I would not worry. If you are going deeper than the boarder towns, it is best to have one. By 2009, you will need a passport to get back in to the U.S.

Oh, and you should have one if you are planning to travel by plane.
