Both answers were graet ! Right on the money !
Immigration is strict. One way to get around it is retuning to the states every 6 months and then reenter on a 6 month tourist card, I have many friends that do this.
As the other person said - its not for every body ! Life here is different in many ways. Some like it others do not.
I think comming down and visiting some cities of intrest is the ONLY way to detirmine this. Have a list of 2 or 3 and visit each. You kinda know whether that city is a good fit. Like it there ? stay for 1 week and look at it from a residents point of view. Check out housing and accomplish as much as you can so you have info to think over when you return. Make a contact there that can help you with questions and things.
I personally love the place. Ive been retired in Acapulco for almost 2 years. I'm sure there will come a time when I start to daydream about this adventure and what else life has in store , but for now its a blast being retired at 41 and hangin out on the beach , ridin my boat and jet skii but like I said - there will be a time .........................
Come down and explore is all I can say........
Learn some good conversational Spanish ( I didnt but do now ) as this will make everything alot easier. Don't expect a vast amount of english spoken here. A little here and there but dont rely on it |

I agree with all of the above. Try it for a while, see how you go, but don't cut your ties. I live down in Tulum and I love it, but it's not easy and it's a far cry from my past life!! When I decided to move 3 years ago, I came with the attitude of "Maybe I'll stay a month, maybe I'll stay a lifetime" and I still try to hold onto that attitude. It's a definite culture shock. And it can be really hard. But it's paradise! It depends what you want too. I left a well paying job, beautiful house and comfortable life to rent hot cockroach filled shoeboxes with orange boxes as furniture and scrape by financially... but I'm happy! And right now I wouldn't change it for the world! Follow your nose and go for what you want - life's too short not to! :) |

Alicia in Cancun

Greetings from Cancun!
I'm an American living in Canun with husband and 2-cats. Here in Cancun there are 10,000 plus non-Mexicans living here.
Playa is beautiful and growing very rapidly so the cost of living is sky rocketing.
Living in resort areas is NOT cheap...in fact...sometimes just crazy expensive...a screen door $300 usd...which you could get in the USA for under $100. Labor is cheap but materials are expensive.
We have a Home Depot...and in January 2008 they re-opened in a bigger and better building...same Mexican Home Depot products...prices increased around 20%...guess they needed the building paid for...
Shoes, clothes, electronics...all more expensive.
Do you love to shop on line? E-bay junkie? Forget that! Unless you have friends that you can send orders to and then they bring them down for you (without tags or sales slips)...this will be a thing of the past for you. Yes, it can be done BUT the taxes you have to pay is out of this world!
With all of this being said...we love it here. The weather is great (even with threats of hurricanes), fresh fruits and veggies, the beach, the people...the list goes on and on.
Just remember you are not coming here for vacation...so you will be doing the same things here that you do where you live. Laundry, grocery shopping, paying electric, water and gas bills, driving in "crazy" traffic...you know what mundane jobs you do there.
And last but not least...how are you going to live? Are you retired? Living off an inheritance? OR going to find a job in Playa at some resort or teach English...well, good luck with that!
BEWARE...immigration is very, very strick. To legallly live and or work in Mexico you need an FM3 look at this link:
http://www.mexperience.com/liveandwork/immigration.htm
Local chat sites are (just 2-of many):
http://www.cancuncare.com
http://www.cancunassist.com
There are similiar sites for Playa as well.
Best Wishes in what ever you decide to do! |

My wife is from MX. In fact, she's in Puerto Vallarta now visiting family. She'll be back next week. We usually stay down there about 3 to 4 mos. a year. I've been to MX over a 100 times...Cabo, Mazatlan, Puerto Vallarta, Guadalajara, Manzanillo, etc.....
There are some really beautiful places to live in MX and some not so good, as in any country, for many different reasons.
Before you completely cut ties and move there to live there, the best advice I could possibly provide is to move there and rent a small apt. for awhile. Move around a little. Mix and mingle with the locals. Only by doing this first hand will one be able to determine if that is the right location for them. No one else can make that decision for you. Living there will be the only way to determine that. Just don't make any long term commitments... it is a very different life and life style and it's not for everyone. If that portion of MX isn't your piece of cake, try a totally different area....there are so many!!!! |

I do. However I live in Mexico City, you are about to move to a small city, but a beautiful place on the Caribbean which is close to Cancun, which is bigger, so I think u will be ok. |
