Hola. I make this trip alot so I can tell you exactly what to expect. I am a young canadian girl and I usually drive alone down here.
First off, you will not save money by driving. Most people who decide to drive only do so because they need to bring a vehicle down or stuff that is too much for the plane. It is a long trip, you should never drive at night, and the road is usually a mess in some spots.
By the time you pay for gas, accomodations, car insurance at the border, food, etc. You are better off to hop on one of the flights and come down.
Yes, its true, if you DO break down, you may have a hard time finding a place to fix your car, or get more gas or that kind of thing. But there is also a government service that is free. This service is called the green angels and they drive up and down their part of the highway in a green tow truck all day long and help stranded motorists free of charge. Never leave your vehicle...stay with it and they will come upon you eventually.
If you are driving a really fancy vehicle and you've got lots of luggage and bling and don't speak the language at all, then you are kinda asking for trouble. Yes, there are locals who prey on you. Especially if you are stuck somewhere. Most of these types of incidents are random and spur of the moment....not planned.
I've been in a couple situations where if I didn't understand Spanish and wasn't a Canadian, it probably would have gone worse for me.
Like I said, I make this trip alot and its not that bad. I stop half way in the town of Guerro n.e.gro and then drive the rest the second day. It is pretty long and hot. I bring lots of spare stuff and lots of water and food. I usually run into at least 3 road blocks by federalies. Some of the stops I have items lifted while my car is inspected. camera and ipod. I now make sure I've got no visible bling or things that are worth taking. |
