well we just want to visit a friend and have something to eat maybe just for an hour. do we still need a passport or can we just do it with out a passport??
How long you will be there is not the determining factor...what matters is HOW you cross the border. At this time, passports are not required to DRIVE to Meixco...only to Fly. After Jan of 2008, passports will berequired for all forms of travel to and from Mexico. See website below to read the law for yourself.

In border areas you can enter Mexico with a US drivers liscense or birth certificate. YOu might need a US passport to reenter the US.

I think it depends on where you go. I went to Tia Juana for an evening and didn't need one. They just asked us if we bought anything while we were there before we came back to U.S.

u still don't need a passport if u are walking across. You do need one if you are flying from mexico into the u.s.
