Drug wars in mexico?? not safe to go there?

My friend told me there are drug wars in mexico and there have been warnings not to go there because taxi drivers will take tourists to random places and keep them hostage and then get a hold of their families and tell their families to give them money to buy drugs and if they do they will let their loved ones go and once they give them the money they just kill the hostages! I'm really scared about going to Mexico for spring break. Has anyone heard about this?

Come to Glasgow, Scotland instead. You even get Ice Cream wars here.

Please stop worrying! The violence is between drug gangs and the police. I guess maybe the whole taxi story might have happened somewhere in Mexico (Mexico is huge!!!) but I've been in Ensenada, Mexico for four weeks now and have taken LOADS of taxis (the taxi drivers know my name and where I'm staying by now, and I'm not kidding) and I haven't been kidnapped...

Please don't worry, have fun and be cautious, as you would be in any new place, and you'll be fine.

Oh, and skip the places which are more dangerous (border cities like Ciudad Juarez, Tijuana, etc), just to minimize danger -NOT because you'll cross over and suddenly be kidnapped and shot.

The resort areas, for now, have been spared of the violence and upheaval of the drug wars in Mexico. If you're flying to Cabo, Cancun, Acapulco... etc... you should be ok.

Stay in well lit areas, never go out at night by yourself, and most importantly, if you get in a taxi, make sure that you know where you're going and that you go in a group.

There will be some that tell you not to go, way too dangerous. Then there will be the hardy Mexicans who'll tell you that it's no different than crime in the U.S. Mexico is definitely more dangerous than the U.S.... but it's not unliveable. The beaches are beautiful and the food is good... and it's now 15 pesos to a dollar, so you'll get everything on the cheap.

Hi! I don't think Mexico is a dangerous country, maybe mexico has drug problems but cancun is a great place to visit, there are beautiful beaches, very nice climate and has a lot of fun!

Drug wars are in other places not in Cancun which is a tourist place.

All the people who say that Mexico's dangerous have never been there and are only repeating what they heard on Fox News.
All the people who say it's safe live in Mexico or travel there often.
So why would you believe a Fox News parrot? If you stay away from the border towns and drug dealers, you'll be 100 percent safe. Click the first link below to see what Cancun looked like on March 16,2009.

Avoid the following places:
Cuidad Juarez, Tijuana plus all towns on border with USA - thats where the gang activity is the highest and the most number of murders and crimes occur.
If you do go to Cuidad Juarez then contact the local mayor Sharif Hafezi for advice on how to best stay out of trouble. There is a dedicated department for tourists.

Hope that helps

here are some links for you that may help.

Ok so I am Mexican, I have family in Mexico and I'm scared to death to go there! It's too violent right now over there and yes they can kid nap you for a ransom! I had a family friend come from Mexico with a magazine of beheaded people and the guys showing the heads of as a sign of pride. I know people that pay the kidnappers money weekly just so they wont kidnap them!! Personally where My mom is from Michoacan Mexico after it gets dark a taxi will not drive anyone to the small town my mom is from because people will rob them! Where my dad is from Durango Mexico is where the beheaded magazine came from. Some other really dangerous places are JALISCO JUAREZ ZACATECAS and MEXICO CITY. Idk if you keep up with the news but there have been so many FAMOUS people being killed by these drug dealers in Mexico I will send you some links to check it out for yourself. MY best advise to you is don't go

I would be highly cautious given the State Department has issued warnings. Yes, the drug cartels have ratcheted up and they have been for a number of years. They were cutting off the heads of policemen and leaving them on the courthouse steps in Acapulco so don't think the resort areas are untouched. The border towns are the worst of course. I would not worry too much about Cancun. That is hardly Mexico, more like Miami. You would be hard pressed to find anything much Mexican in Cancun. But I still would not venture out and about with these cartels looking for easy marks. We have had a timeshare in Ixtapa, Mexico for 14 years and wouldn't consider going back ever again. If I want to hear Spanish I can go to Miami but have better beaches and food and I know where to avoid the gangs. I have never saved a dime by going to Mexico. Loved Ixtapa but been there done that.

Don't go then... simple as that

Your friend is correct sadly. This is not an exaggeration. Mexico is very dangerous for locals and tourists right now.

Do a search on "kidnappings" or "drug violence mexico".

country gurl
Yes actually, and i've also heard that they are decapitating people in Cancun. Not trying to scare you, but you might want to know!
