I've been in both sites!
Much more better for tourists is CancĂşn. There you can also visit many mayan ruins, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen and more; the night life is great, the beach is beautiful and the caribbean sea is gorgeus (beauty blue!).
Mazatlán is not as touristic, the people from there has lives on his own without tourism. There is no jungle (Mazatlán is near to the northern desert), neither ancient ruins nor great beachs. |

Cacun is like going to a pretty american city where they all speak english, there are almost no real mexicans and they only accept dollars.

I have never been to Cancun, but I am in love with Mazatlan. Pueblo Bonito Emerald Bay is the most amazing resort down there and they have great bars(pool bars as well). There is a live band at a bar named Tony´s that isn´t to much of a 20year old joint. There are lots of great restaurants on the tourist strip where mostly all the hotels/resorts are. You would have to go to the Plazuela Machado its an old town square and the square surrounded with restaurants and at night all the tables are outside...there is music at its really great. Cancun, Mazatlan is for young people, in cancun you can find moderate pricing hotels and nightlife too.
BUT my advise is got to Playa del Carmen, is better, nicer and cheaper (of course there are VERY EXPENSIVE hotels too) |

mazatlan tends to be on the humid side and the waves are huge which is perfect for me the beaches are excellent, right in front of your hotel , cancĂşn is more touristy but excellent beaches and thw water is just as warm but alot calmer |

I have been to both, and it all depends on what you would like to see. Mazatlan is mostly city. Cancun has much more to offer in regards to sight-seeing, and VERY fun nightlife. If you decide Cancun: STEER CLEAR OF THE GRAN CARIBE REAL RESORT. Horrible. |
