I think Guadalajara
Monterrey is very similar to Houston, Monterrey is the only first world city in Mexico. If you want to live in a real Mexican city. Guadalajara is the option, is the 3rd most important city in Mexico and Jalisco is a very beautiful state.
but there's a lot of options, you can try in Merida, Yucatan (very good schools) i'm from Merida and is a very beautiful city, the people here is very warm, and the beach is near to the city, and the most important thing.. is a very safe city, you can walk in the streets by 2.am and no problem. and the cost ($$$) of live here is less than guadalajara, you can rent a house for 250 dollars a month or 300 it depends.
if you think to come here.. contact me (jaimikoboy@hotmail.com).. i can recommend things, places, schools and everything..

Guadalajara is better. Monterrey with all the corporations and industry seems like Houston with a few more Spanish speakers.
Plus you have more options to explore. on weekends, in the state of Jalisco, like Tlaquepaque, Tonala, Lake Chapala, Tequila and Puerto Vallarta. |

I think Monterrey is an interesting place, with nice buildings but the weather is extremely hot-likes Kuala Lumpur hehe.
Guadalajara is more comfortable and more rich in traditions, a lot of antiques catholic churchs, and near to Guadalajara you can visit Tonalá, Tlaquepaque, Tequila ,Tapalpa, these are interesting places to buy handcrafts, eat traditional foods, listen mariachi, drink tequila and have fun!!! |

Guadalajara is prettier, greener and cleaner. Moreover, its more mexican.
Monterrey is more business-like city, has a bigger student community (from all over the country and overseas), has a better nightlife. It is an Industrial city just as Houston or Detroit.
Both are size similar, has world class restaurants, clubs, and hospitals. Monterrey has better Universities but the weather is very crazy (from 35°F in Winter to 110°F in Summer). Guadalajara has a milder weather year round.
It depends what u want, |

Guadalajara definitely!!! I would never go to Monterrey at least i have some very important business to do.
Guadalajara is more cultural, more global city, industrial but well planed, tons of museums, parks, upscale night life and restaurants, high-end boutiques and hotels for all budgets
and the best world class events in Mexico.
Cosmopolitan and very european style city, people are nice and very educated also the weather is perfect.
Both cities have world class universities but definitely you will enjoy more Guadalajara by far, is famous for foreign students hospitality.
Monterrey is a very americanized city that you wouldn´t enjoy be cause it looks dirty compared to an american city. |

Monterrey has a very bad weather. Very cold in Winter and very hot in Summer. Also it is a very big city with lots of problems specialy violence.
Guadalajara has more stable weather and very safe city. This is a beautiful colonial place with lots of history, art, spectacular buildings and world class universities.
That simple. |
