Gifts for our maid in Cabo? |
My new hubby and I are going to Cabo in January - staying at the Riu Santa Fe. Usually when we go on holiday we take gifts for our maid - like makeup, body wash, perfume, etc. Is this a good idea in Cabo as well? I don't want to offend the maid or anything, and of course we will tip her with cash as well. Thanks for any help that you can offer! |

Hola. Let me explain about our resort staff here in Cabo. Most are not from around here. They come from the really really dirt poor towns on the mainland, and they come only to work. They make about $4 US a day.
Unfortunately, they go home each night to these shanty towns that are forming in the arroyos...practically cardboard and plywood. You don't see these towns because the government has conveniently built a road that bypasses them as you come from the airport....Anyways, there is no reasonable accomodation for them here in Cabo, nor do they have any friends or relatives to put them up, and forget renting or buying a place. It doesn't bother them. They just work and sleep, and send all their earnings home by moneywire.
So do you think toiletries would be a good idea? I can almost guarantee you they get plenty of that stuff when it is left behind by the guests. Tip if you want to help and that will be most appreciated.
Enjoy your vacation and don't forget how lucky you are!

Money is always well received. One dollar (10 pesos) per day would be welcomed by most Mexican maids as a nice gift. |

Bringing her a perfume and also cash is very nice from you.
Tips are included in the rate at Riu and in almost all All inclusive Resorts, but extra tips is what make the difference on the employees quality of live.
That kind of gifts (perfume, makeup, etc.) are very expensive for an average Maid, and is considered a luxury that otherwise they won't buy, if she has 2 or 3 kids to support.
Thank you |

Forget trying to guess and just leave pesos. Much easier for them and they can buy what they need.
Most Mexicans need basics and not gift items |

A gift basket of things like body powder, shampoo, soaps and body wash would be non-age-specific and would be a sweet gesture. That way if several maids worked on your room they could share. |

A nice perfume or a pair of earrings would be a good gifts and also a nice souvenir from your city |

To fully explore a culture when traveling internationally one must "ask the locals". There you go...............Have her take you to HER favorite restaurant. Take her whole family to dinner. Stop by the store and have her pick out her favorite Tequila. Take her and her family to her favorite beach. Take her children shopping for school supplies , clothes and take them to the beach if she cant make it.
All benefit !!!!! |
