Yes it's safe. I'm not going to lie to you and tell you Mexico is a paradise and that it's as safe as the U.S. But I will tell you that there are 100 million peolpe in this country, and although we are going through some hard times, we are going about our lives. Use precaution.

As far as the greyhounds... millions of Mexicans use them every year with no problem. Yes, there's been accidents, but not as many as there's been plane crashes in the U.S. It really also depends on where you go. Villages in the mountains are hard to get to and the bus drivers have no issues driving fast on sharp switchbacks.

Word of advice: Make sure that you bring a blanket... Mexican bus drivers BLAST the AC.

On weekends and holidays it may be necessary to buy your ticket a few days in advance (48 hours is usually sufficient).

When purchasing your ticket you will often be asked your name - if your name is non-Hispanic it may be helpful to have it written down so you can just show it to the ticket salesperson. You may be shown a graph of the bus and get to choose your seat.

Air-conditioning is sometimes excessively cold so take a sweater. Occasionally the air-conditioning breaks down, so wear layers that you can remove.

For long trips take food and water with you.

As usual, a lot of ill informed people answering.

I have the a website that includes the most comprehensive info on bus travel in Mexico.

http://www.larpman.com/transportpages/buspages/buswi.html

It's being updated, but there is still plenty of useful info.

Bus travel in Mexico is safe. Nearly all the reports of accidents (and I follow this carefully) I have seen, where small charter bus companies.

It is often as cheap or a bit cheaper to use one of the discount* airlines on some long distance routes.

"Bus travel in Mexico is always problematic and usually overcrowded. The drivers go too fast on those narrow winding roads too. They have a large number of accidents. Lately there have been far too many American kidnappings for money. The situation is dangerous right now.I would recomment flying to as close to your destination as possible."

jajaja, you just shut up now.

i have been from Tijuana to D.F. maybe 50 times on Estrella Blanca, i leave my bags on the bus filled with cash, laptop computer, everything. even on the long stop en la central camionera when they clean.

never once has anything been stolen. never once was a driver unsafe, never once was it dangerous.

you peoples on yahoo answers have no idea what you are talking about.

That depends on what type of weapons you plan on bringing.
