I would say Guanajuato, it's safer first of all and as you are going to be there just 3 days you'll have a chance to see many things about it, Mexico City would take you months.
ps the airport its around 15-20 miles away |

I haven't been to Guanajuato for years, but I'd choose it for a 3-day weekend. If you're looking for old twisted city streets, cute restaurants, and history, it's a great spot. You can really feel transported back in time in the twisted streets of the old town. There is a lot of street life, and you can also visit some of the very historical spots of Mexico in the city and nearby. It's cool at night and the air is much cleaner than Mexico City, and personally I felt safer there (again, that was 10 years ago). http://www.aboutguanajuato.com/ might help you make some choices too. The disadvantages are that you fly into Leon, and then have to get a cab to Guanajuato, which isn't all that close, and some drivers get lost getting into the city center (ours picked up a kid in the city and paid him to get us the plaza central). And our hotel, while perfectly located right in the center plaza area, had the disadvantage of hearing all the street noise 'til early morning, including a lady selling a toy that sounded like a rooster crowing. But it was great not to need a car or taxi any time we wanted to wander.
Mexico City has more sophisticated night life and world city shopping. |

It all depends what you are looking for. Two very different options. I'd be like trying to chose between NYC and Palm Springs. If you'd never been to any, I'd say Mexico City has a lot more to offer. Museums, Restaurants, Night Life, Hotels, Historical Sites, etc. |

i say guanajuato because it's very relaxing and small enough to be "doable" for a long weekend trip. i'm afraid that if you go to mexico city you would be totally overwhelmed with things to do and see, and spend a lot of time lost in traffic, wandering without a destination.
guanajuato, guanajuato is a nice little city, very colonial, and a long weekend is the perfect amount of time to stay there. are you going with a couple? i think it's a very romantic place too! |

The cities are so different, I would have to say that the answer really depends on what you like to do on a long weekend. I also wonder if you have been to Mexico before, and what cities you visited in the past. Mexico City is A LOT BIGGER, more cosmopolitan, and offers a wider variety of activities. You can spend weeks exploring Mexico City and still be left with many more treasures to find. Mexico City has world class museums, countless churches full of baroque treasures, awesome archeological sites, many buildings with murals decorated by the great Mexican muralists, very diverse neighborhoods, art galeries, concert halls, bars, discos, theaters, etc. Of course, Mexico City also suffers from heavy traffic, air pollution (especially during the winter months) and all the problems you might expect in such a big city.
On the other hand, Guanajuato is smaller, quaint, and easy to manage on foot. Yet it still has quite a cultural life. There is the Diego Rivera Museum (with an impressive collection of his paintings), the amazing church of Valenciana, many squares and small pedestrian streets worth exploring. Guanajuato is also a university town, home to one of the oldest universities in the Americas. This brings a different dimension. The city feels young and fresh even though it is a baroque city. Guanajuato also has excellent restaurants and cafes with post card views of the city, a first rate symphony orchestra (they play every Friday evening and tickets cost only US$7.50), and many cultural activites associated both to the university and to a strong cultural tradition. During the month of October Guanajuato is the home of the most important and impressive cultural festival in Mexico. A month long of top of the line music, theater, poetry and dance from all around the world.
If by any chance you run out of things to do in Guanajuato, you can also take day trips to historic sites like Dolores (the birth place of the Mexican independence war), and baroque cities like San Miguel de Allende.
So, both cities will offer plenty of things to do but perhaps Mexico City might be too busy for just one weekend, while Guanajuato may allow you a more relaxing but still very interesting trip. On the other hand, if you crave for the excitement of the big city, then Mexico City might be the place for you, even if it is only for a weekend. |
