ive been to the mayan riviera in mexico (aka riviera maya) which is only like twenty minutes south of cancun. cancun is very busy and touristy so if you like that and you like hotels on top of eachother and a big party atmosphere then it would be the place for you. if you like a little more private, relaxed vacation then i would suggest the riviera maya. you can always visit cancun during the day or night to see it but when im on vacation i like to get away from all of the hustle and noise once in a while and relax.
personally i really didnt like mexico that much. i was there this past summer and i must say i reallly liked jamaica far better and the dominican republic. again i like places that make me feel like im somewhere tropical. mexico reminded me of the u.s. with highways but nicer beaches. it all depends on your preference.

Some parts are beautiful but I guess it depends what you are looking for. For me, it was a bit girls gone wild with hundred of american students on their spring break getting bladdered.

It depends on what you are looking for. If you want a cheap air fare and then the ability to see a WONDERFUL country, beautiful Mayan ruins, kind people, beautiful colonial buildings...., then hop a bus from Cancun, visit Merida, and go to the beach in Chelem.
If you want to see a bunch of drunk stupid American college kids, in an overpriced environment, Cancun is the place....., or you could save money and just go to Daytona Beach or S. Padre Island.

Yes, it's very pretty there, and they have a really great lil shopping center not too far form one of the ports. This coming from a girl who hates shopping too.

yeah its really beautiful but i would definitely rent a car and explore the area around too as most of cancun is quite touristy.
