Mexico's gun laws are quite restrictive, and extremely harsh if you run afoul of them.
Unlike Canada, where you're likely to be turned away at the border if you have unauthorized firearms or ammo, unwary visitors to Mexico have languished in Mexican jails for five years due to a single spent casing in their vehicle.
It is true that Mexico's constitution has a Right to Keep and Bear Arms for its citizens. However, it is quite a bit more restrictive than the USA's Second Amendment:

No guns for gringos in Mexico. There are a number hunting companies but they provide the firearms. Check online. |

That is banned here.
To carry a fire weapon we need a special permit from mexican army; and the maximum caliber is .38
If you have to stop at a military check point (and you will, for sure) they will look for any gun or drugs at your vehicle, if a gun or rifle is found and you don't have the mexican army registration and permission you will be sent to a mexican federal prision; to carry fire weapons is a federal crime in MĂ©xico. |
