Hey, what if I wanted to DRIVE from California to Mexico city, do you need any kind of a special permit?

I know that I need an I.D. and proof of citizenship, (or did the "passport required" thing go into effect yet?) but aside from that, is there any special permit I need because I'd be driving my car instead of taking a flight or a bus? I'm planning a road trip and I just want ot know cause I don't want to get in any kind of trouble with them cop dudes down there. Thanks for your answers!

Passports are not needed fro LAND travel to and from Mexico until June 2009. See 1st site below. you will need Mexican car ins. ...and there are many companies who sell it. I got quotes of anywhere from $300 a year to $1800 a year from different companies when I moved to Mexico...for the same coverage. See 2nd site below for my favoirite place. You will need Mexican car permit...see 3rd site. See 4th site for recomended route...but add 3 or 4 hours as this site is always short on time. You will also need a Guia Roji, the Mexican road atlas...can buy it at big book stores or order from Amazon.com. Whenever you can take a toll road instead of the free road, do it. Have plenty of pesos on hand for the tolls. There is a guide in the back of the Guia Roji that tells the tolls..tho I find it hard to use...and you gotta pay 'em anyway...so just have plenty of small bills and 10 peso coins in the car.

You should get Mexican insurance on your auto. This can be purchased at the border before you cross into Mexico. Then you will need a Mexican visa which will cost you about $23 but is good for 6 months. You will also need a car permit. All these can be obtained at the border. Don't forget to bring a copy of the title to your auto as you'll need it to get a permit.

You also need a car permit for your auto to be in Mexico. My parents have been going there for the past 10 years and they have to get one. You can get one right when you get into Mexico but it takes about 3 hours to get it. Last year my parents went online and get it and it got sent throught the mail. I forgot what the sight was or how much it cost. Its a sticker that you put in your car. Oh and yes you need a passport now

This is what they are called though

Permisos para autos.

Try googling it.

you do not need a passport, but you need a driver's license and to sign a waiver when you enter Mexico and they will give you a piece of paper that proves that you are legally in Mexico and it also says for how long you are going to stay, you need to pay a sort of deposit with the Mexican customs for your car, this is just to guarantee that you will return the car and not leave it down south, i think it is around 500 dlls, they will return it when you bring back the car.
if you still want to do this thing let me show you about the roads
http://www.sectur.gob.mx/wb2/sectur/traza_tu_ruta_carretera

this tells you about how much it is going to cost you in the roads, the kilometers and more or less the time. good luck

That One Dude
You need a passport, your CA drivers license, and mexican auto insurance. There are a few US companies that will give u temporary mexican auto insurance. I know Sanborns off hand does it. This is Mandatory down there now by the way even if you are doing a simple road trip.

TO BRING A VEHICLE IN TO MEXICO YOU MOST CERTAINLY DO NEED A PASSPORT.
I SPENT TWO DAYS AT THE BORDER WAITING FOR FED-EX TO SHIP ME MINE AND THEY DID NOT WANT TO SEND IT UNTIL I HAD AN ADDRESS TO SEND IT. THAT WAS ANOTHER ISSUE.
ANYONE THAT TELLS YOU YOU DO NOT IS FULL OF BEANS.
Mexico does NOT recognize foregn auto insurance . You need to make sure you get a MEXICAN INSURANCE POLICY.
You can call Lewis and Lewis as they have offices in Mexico and Sanborns is very popular. It can be bought at the Fiscal office where they process you vehicle
Car insurance for a 6 month period is about $350.00 for full coverage and that is what my friend paid just last year.
You should have a credit card or it will cost you a refundable large cash deposit to ensure you return or take your vehicle out of Mexico (ie Guatemala o Belize)
There are Federal Fiscal computers at all borders and all major crossings and keep in mind not all crossings can process your vehicle.

lexiewexy1
Yea, you especially need your I.D. in case a cop asks you for it.You also need a passport to cross the border of Mexico. But you need to be a citizen.

besides your drivers license and a passport probly not. i think you still need a passport if its out of the country..if you have insurance youd probly need that. but not mexican insurance if its just a road trip
