Ignore the idiots that tell you you have to pay off the "federales". What a load of trash! You will be just fine. If he has not driven in Mexico before, be sure he gets a Guia Roji, the Mexican road atlas...can order it at Amazon.com. Drive only during the day. See sites below for info on the car permit and my favorite car ins. place. Have a great trip. I am an American living in Mexico..have had no problems driving in Mexico, and know plenty of other gringos who have driven a great deal in Mexico with no problems.

Safer than where? Paris? Beirut? Be aware of what's going on around you as you would any place in the world.

Vaggaloor
Yes it is.
I'm here, at Jalisco state.

Saying it is not safe is like asking you:
I heard about gun shots in USA schools everyday, is it safe to study there?

Sabrina S
I think it's safe, just not the most comfortable way to travel. How far are you planning on driving?

Nice and Solo
I think it will be safe as long as u have ID and and passport . have a passport just in case and make sure you are prepared.like food etc etc

No, No, NO!!! At least, not unless you're prepared to pay the federales off for running a non-existent stop sign on a dirt road in the middle of nowhere. I would say have some serious cash on you to keep yourself out of jail.
