Hotel in Cancun, in January, best and worse? |
Ok. Planning a trip to Cancun in early January (between 3rd and 14th). I just looked at a map of the "hotel zone," and it's a little intense. Anyone have any hotel advice? It will be my boyfriend and I. We don't need too many amenities, Maybe just beach access. Any place amazing, cheap, and of course is there anywhere we should definitely avoid?
AND how crowded will the area be at this time of the year? |

If you want a great hotel then I would recommend a Riu chain. There are three in CancĂșn. The Riu CancĂșn, Riu Palace Las Americas, and the Riu Caribe. All three are all-inclusive and another neat amenity is that if you book at one of these resorts you can visit the other two and eat, drink, swim, use the beach, etc. you just have to sleep at the one you book at. My favorite is Riu Caribe. It has the best pool and biggest beach of the three. Riu Palace is amazing and very beautiful, but the beach is very small. Same as Riu CancĂșn very nice, but not as big of a beach as the Caribe. Any of those three though are great. The Riu CancĂșn and Palace are really close to all the major clubs, restaurants, and shopping. You can literally walk right to the main section of the hotel zone. Riu Caribe is a little farther down and you will have to take a bus, but it's only a five minute bus ride, which isn't bad. If you want a great hotel in CancĂșn then pick on of those three and you will have an amazing time. I will give you links to the three to check out and see which one you like better and also reviews for each of the hotels.
Also, Fiesta Americana Grand Coral Beach CancĂșn is very nice (on the travel channel's top ten resorts in Mexico)
and also Me by Melia is very nice (expensive) and Le Meridien is also superb (travel channel's top ten resorts in Mexico also, but it's expensive).
Places to avoid that are not good hotels are Oasis CancĂșn and any Oasis hotel in CancĂșn for that matter. NH Krystal isn't that great. The Westin isn't good at all. Blue Bay Club or Blue Bay Getaway are horrible. Another one I think is garbage but everyone seems to like for some reason is Moon Palace. Don't waste you time with this time share resort...it's garbage and they will rob you blind. Also, it's not a bad hotel, but it's little and tiny and don't offer much is Gran Caribe Real. I wouldn't waste money on this hotel either.
Also, another you may want to check out that is Adults Only and is very relaxing is Le Blanc Resort and Spa.
Another place to consider is Sun Palace...it's on the quieter section of CancĂșn and it's couples only.
All in all though I would recommend a Riu hotel. They have an amazing staff and it's their job to make sure you have fun. They entertain you during the day and night and then after the night show they perform in the hotel, if you choose, they take a group out on the town to a different club every night. They do a great job and make your vacation a memorable one. So, I would definitely consider Riu before any other. Also, it won't be that crowded either during this time. Enjoy your vacation!!! |

I have been to Cancun several times and have a trip scheduled for November. I love the Marriott Casa Magna - I think it is "amazing" and if you book a package through expedia, the price is very reasonable. It has a fairly large beach area. Many Cancun hotels have little to no beach area - if that is important to you, make sure you investigate fully. The "hotel zone" is actually shaped like a number 7. If you want a large beach area, look for a hotel that is located in the top of the "7". This is the bay area and the beaches are bigger and you can swim there. At many hotels in the lower part of the "7" you will not be able to swim due to rocks and rough surf. Casa Magna falls into this category, but the rest of the hotel and pool make up for it. If you want less expensive, look into Ambiance Villas. It is on the bay and they have a big beach for Cancun. My best advice is to do a search by price on expedia and eliminate anything downtown and the first few hotel zone options. Always reference the trip advisor website. Don't stay downtown, but do visit there. The bus system is safe and cheap and you can go anywhere! A great downtown restaurant is LaParilla - we go every time. The food is authentic and not expensive. Stay away from chain restaurants in the hotel zone, unless you are into that sort of thing. They are expensive and a few have tried to over charge us. Look closely at the bill. January is a nice time of year that will not be too crowded and the weather is beautiful. A nice day trip is to take a party boat to Isle Murejes. Hope this helped - have a great time! |

I have vacationed in Cancun twice in three years. It's one of my favorite places simply because I can get on a bus and go where I want (shopping, clubs, downtown shopping area, restaurants etc) I stayed in the Westin Regina the fist time. It is a pretty hotel but nothing spactular to me. The next time I stayed in the Gran Melia. My boyfriend was supposed to go with me that time but he couldn't get off work. When I settled in and walked the hotel I was bummed he wasn't with me. It is very pretty and it had so many little place for a couple to snuggle up (in the lobby, cabanas by the pool). The Gran Melia is directly across the street from Aqua World. The day before I left I went over there and did the sub-sea tour.
I actually rented someones timeshare in that hotel for $700 for an entire week. That was a good price for two people to split on a room for a week. I like that hotel that much I WILL take him there.
Since I have been there a couple times, I can now make sense of the map. I took pics of the hotels I will look into staying at on my future visits to Cancun.
I liked: The Oasis, Sunset Lagoon, RIU's, Fiesta Americana. |
