jaja. farmer jed is funny. the first responder is crazy. nobody's hiding in the sand man! driving to mexico is actually a great adventure. i've driven from chicago to toluca (very close to mexico city, actually a bit farther) 3 times. once in a 1976 jeep cj7. once in a 1966 rambler classic, and once in a modern car which i'm sure you'll be doing. its tiring! i did it alone every time. chicago to texarkana...about 14 hours or so. its a good place to spend the night and it always feels good to get a lot of miles behind you on the first day, right? day 2.....texas texas texas. about 11 hours to laredo. buy your mexican insurance there and cross in the morning. nuevo laredo to mexico city is about 16 hours. my suggestion is that you do it in 2 days. san luis potosi is a good place to stop or queretaro. then the final leg is easy and you'll have your wits about you. driving in df (you better get used to calling mexico city df, ok) is not for the faint of heart! dont do it tired. you will get into an accident.

my question for you is this. with the cost of gas prices, and adding on motels, insurance, cost of food for 4 days, the hassle of stopping at the border for the temporary importation permit of your car, not to mention the danger of driving here. make no mistake...it is dangerous. not so much on the highway, but in df, watch out..... then factor in the cost of toll roads in mexico. i think its about 600 pesos to get from the border to df, and the unknown....breakdowns, etc. is it really worth the bother? fly if you can. driving here is a great adventure, but think about it first. (your travel times may vary as i've come in old cars)

good luck...rob

edit...to actually answer your question.....mind your own business, and nobody will bother you. i have never had a security issue while driving here and ive driven much of the country. yes there is a travel advisory at the border, but if youre just passing through....there wont be an issue.

Oh my god. That first answer is hilarious. It is safe to drive across the border. There are armed guards everywhere. Just stay on the main roads, which is the advisory anytime you travel to mexico. I have been to mexico three times in the last three months to visit my grandfather. Twice I drove and 1 time flew. The people who are trying to cross the border mostly do so at night and they already have cars waiting for them.

OPC
they have armed guards at the border not that scary

Farmer Jed
Driving in Mexico is no different than driving in St. Paul - except that the drivers exceed the speed limit in Mexico instead of going 10 MPH below the speed limit like in Minnesota.......................

But looking on the bright side - the English is probably better in Mexico.

Mikey will be honest here - if you really dont care about hopping on a plane to do your travel - I certainly would.
Minnesota to Mexico is a long drive - time is money.Gas will also add to the cost. You will need Mexican car insurance - Not cheap. You will also need temporary tags/ permission for your car. You will have time in getting across the border with all this stuff. We have not even discussed the driving habits down here - pretty crazy ! Throw in all these things and then the main question is the danger factor ?????????
Just not worth it to Mikey.
Fly baby , fly...........Much easier and they serve beer on the plane with peanuts and a movie.....Come on , no brainer

The first answer... he he not rigth at all, the other two are ok... I have travel by car lots of time well Mex Usa, and its ok.... at the border there is one of the most safe places...

J
I would fly. Mexicans are hiding in the sand and as tourist goes past they steal the car, kill the driver, use his identiy to get across the border, kidnapp their wife and kids, and eventually will assume their life in society
