You can speak to one of the vacation representatives in the hotel. They can arrange it for you. There is usually a busload of people taken at a time. When i was there i went to Chichenitza that way.

There are tours (best way) or you can rent a car and get a map.
There are several different ruins near Cancun--Tulum, Coba and Chichen Itza. You're probably thinking of Chichen Itza--that's the most famous one. That's the one where, on the spring and fall equinox, the shadow of the snake can be seen along the side of the steps.
Map at the below link.

Call the hotel and ask what tours are available.

Wait till you get there.
In your hotel lobby, there will be all kinds of information about bus trips to the mayan ruins.
There are several options.
Largest most extensive, but a good 6 hour bus ride to get there. Chicken itsu (not the correct spelling, just the way I remember it.)
A 2.5 hour bus ride..Coba. Very extensive ruins spread out over a 10 square mile area. Only 10% excavated. Work in progress.
Close by. A 1 hour bus trip. Tulum. Small but completely excavated. By the ocean and a lovely small beach. (take your swimming stuff)
So, go by how much time or interest that you have.
