How do it make international phone calls while vacationing in mexico?
Last time when we were in Mexico (Cancun) we had to call home daily since my parents were watching our daughter and we needed to keep in touch. Anyhow, the hotel had calling cards which could be used at any public phone (one was right outside our hotel). There were easy to follow instructions on the back and it was $10 for about 20 minutes. It worked out great for us. Amazingly the public phones worked just fine too. It saved us a load of money since calling from the hotel room would cost a ton.

Buy a prepaid card in Mexico for the payphones. We had some outrageous charges when we used our cell phones. We bought the phone cards for $10 US.

Usually Hotel provides such service billable into your credit card.
Other options:
Phone cards that allow making oversea call from oversea with 1800 #. Carry one with you before departure.
If you carry mobile phone and is GSM. You could buy local prepay credit and snap the chip into the phone. It allow someone from oversea to call you as well.

It´s very easy:
Just have to dial 001 before the desired area code and the local number. At the public telephones in every mexican corner you can find the precise directions of calling to any region of the world.

If you are on verizon, you may need to get your phone unlocked for international service.

We used the Internet cafe, located in any little city. It cost us somewhere around $3-$5 to call home and talk to our kids, my sister in law, my brother, etc.. So much cheaper than using our cell phones, or hotel calling cards.
