How do you bring a car into mexico?

I know that it has to be 10 years old, but what are the steps and such. I mean to be able to drive it without a permit, so you can keep it their legaly.

Are you planning on nationalizing the car? And leave it in Mexico forever? Then I would say contact your nearest Mexican consulate and ask them. They can probably handle the forms and take your money.
If you're getting an FM-T or FM-3 visa, you can get a temporary import sticker which will be valid for as long as the visa is valid (and this would work for any year vehicle). See the two links below for more information.

You get an import sticker at the border. Car can be any age. You must have a Mexican Visa, and the car is tied to your Visa. An FM-T Tourist Visa is good for 180 days and so is your import car permit.

When you leave Mexico, you must have the sticker removed and get a receipt. Keep that receipt. You may need it if you return to Mexico.

You must have Mexican car insurance as well.

If you mean legalize the car in Mexico, and get Mexican plates, remember that it is almost impossible to get it re-registered back in the US. It is a fairly complex, not inexpensive process and most folks use an attorney.

"RHINO" gave you the ONLY correct info. There are car "brokers" at every border crossing who will sell you the appropriate temporary registration. then, when you get the car to your destination, it needs to be registered locally. If you are just visiting there, or if you are an American going to live there...you do not want to legalize your car in Mexico. Far better to just keep it as an American car.

if u plan on leaving the car in mexico then u need to change it to a mexican car. u will have to pay between 500 to 2000 dollars it really depends. if u dont want to change it to mexico then u have to get a permit for 6months.
