How does Mexico celebrate their major holidays?

Well... that depends on the part of the country.. Up north is very americanized, and south is more traditional and "Mexican".

New Year is just to wait to 12 AM, usually with drinks like wine or , is similar to the US.

Feb 6 - Epiphany or Dia de Reyes, is kinda like a 2nd. not-so-big Christmas, parents give present to their children, and we eat "rosca de reyes" which is a big donut-shape cake. In this cake there is a little doll that is hidden in the cake. If someone get this little doll (I mean, very little, little enough to hide it in a cake and to not notice, it was usually made with wood, but now is made of plastic) he or she has to pay for the "tamaliza" (a entire quantity of tamale to share with a whole group of friends and family). But this "tamaliza" is to be done on February 2nd (Candlemas - Candelaria).

Feb 2 - "Dia de la Candelaria" or Candlemas. Catholic celebration, in this day is when the "tamaliza" happens. Actually it has lost its meaning and most people does not even celebrate it anymore.

Feb 24 - Saint Valentine or "Dia del Amor y la Amistad (Day of Love and Friendship". Just like the US, you buy flowers, and candies and give it to your beloved ones.

May 5 - Cinco de Mayo (with a "C") actually is not Mexico's Independence Day, but the celebration of the Battle of Puebla, in which Mexican Army defeated French Army. Is not big at all, is just another day off for most Mexicans, and in my experience, there is not any kind of parade anywhere. Perhaps in Puebla there is one, but in the rest of the country, no.

Sept 16 - Now, this is THE REAL Mexican Independence Day, there are parades, fireworks, and a whole congregation of people in every Zocalo, the main square of every Mexican town and city. The President does it in Mexico City, each state governor do it on the capital city of their respective state. It is a historical and symbollic representation on how the Mexican Independence begun.

Oct 31 - Mostly in northern states, people celebrate Halloween, is exactly the same as the US. Kids go to houses to ask for candy, and if not, they vandalize your house (you little bastards... but I scared the hell out of'em with small and harmless but very noisy fireworks last year. I know this sounds like an old bitter men, but I'm only 21)

Nov 2 - Day of the Dead. People remember their passed away loved ones, and go to the cemetery to pray for their souls. The most famous and marvelous demonstration of this holiday happens in Janitzio, in the state of Michoacan.

Nov 20 - Mexican Revolution. Just like sept 16, there are parades, fireworks and a big celebration. But is not as big as the Independence holiday

Dec. 12 - Day of our Lady of Guadalupe. Patron saint of all Mexicans, Virgin of Guadalupe is certainly the Catholic saint for almost all Mexicans have devotion for. People go to the church.

Christmas is usually celebrated with a great dinner, and the "posada", in which the people sing Catholic carols and pray "novenas" (a sort of Catholic prays).

PS... The guy above is right... Thanksgiving is NOT a holiday in Mexico... AT ALL

holidays in mexico are the best. it usually depends what part of mexico you are going to. i go to guanajuato every year, and in the town i go to they have fiestas the entire month of december and january to celebrate christmas, new years, and dia de los reyes, plus the towns birthday...they usually have artist performing every single night at jaripeos, ferias, and nightclubs...for those two months the town doesnt sleep.
they dont celebrate thanksgiving in mexico and cinco de mayo isnt celebrated either ( at least not in most cities, except puebla) for independence day they have parades and people usually have the day off...a lot of tequila and beer is involved in most celebrations.
another major celebration is December 12, which is the day of the virgin mary. during the days of lent, lots of people take vacatons and go to beach resorts, and el dia de los muertos is very big as well..that usually involves people making alters for their dead relatives and going to the cemetery.

We donÂ´t celebrate thanksgiving day but we celebrate christmas, flag day, independence day, dia de muertos (day of the dead) and all that and we usually take the day off... is like really usual when we are celebrating holidays like that, that we eat a lot of typical mexican food and we drink tequila... sometimes we have fireworks and another thing that is really important to mexican ppl is that all this celebration is with all our family we are really close to each other so I hope it helps!

Gerardo's answer is excellent, just one comment... The celebration of the Virgen de Guadalupe is on December 12th, not the 16th.

It usually consists of "day off", involving even banks, schools, etc. Religious ceremonies in Christmas are very popular, on "5 de mayo" parades are held on different places around Mexico, but specially in the state of Puebla and its capital city Puebla de los Angeles.
Thanks giving IS NOT a common celebration in Mexico.
